  1. Berkeley High School Program Redesign

4. Discussion Item
4.1. Berkeley High School Program Redesign
Rationale:

BERKELEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

TO: Donald Evans, Ed.D, Superintendent
FROM: Sam Passarow, Principal, Berkeley High School
DATE:  May 25, 2016
SUBJECT: Berkeley High School Program Redesign

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Beginning in 2014-2015 BHS leadership began giving substantial thought to structural and programmatic changes at Berkeley High School. Noting that the current structure of BHS does not fully align to what current research says is best for all students in terms of high school structure and programming, the efforts deepened this year with the formation of a design team that has been hard at work analyzing research and developing proposals for changes to the structure and student assignment system at Berkeley High School.

The purpose for Wednesday’s Board Meeting is to review the Berkeley High School Redesign proposal that has gained the most traction at this point over a year-long redesign process. Members of the Design Team will present the purpose of the redesign, features of the research used to inform the process and feedback from the BHS community including teachers, parents and students.

We will discuss the decision-making and research process in depth and we will analyze financial implications of the redesign proposal that is being put forward by the BHS Design Team. The Berkeley High Design Team members will also seek input on critical design elements as well as key policy decisions regarding the implementation of the redesign in the 2017-2018 school year.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Receive the report and update from BHS Design Team.
