4.1. Expulsion Policy
Rationale:

BERKELEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

SUBJECT:     BP re Expulsions

Attached is a clean revised draft policy governing expulsions, with comments indicating substantive changes from the previous version.  These changes were made in response to the direction from the Board that the Committee received at the Board’s June 1 meeting.  This version has also been vetted by the District’s legal counsel.

As a reminder, the Committee has drafted this Expulsion Policy to govern the District’s response to the most egregious of student violations. This interim policy will then be incorporated into a comprehensive Student Discipline and Intervention Policy when the other pieces of such a policy are completed.

When this Policy is approved by the Board, the corresponding administrative regulations (currently contained in AR 5144.1) will be revised in accordance with the policy, and the District’s discipline handbook and parent/student handbook will also be revised in accordance with the policy.

We look forward to discussing the revisions at the June 14 Committee meeting and ensuring that they reflect the will of the Board as expressed at the June 1 meeting.
