These items are staff presentations and/or updates to the Board of Education.

The Board of Education will explore possibilities for K-12 Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) options. The Board will study IBL educational program components, such as student learning through interests and essential questions, integrated curricular projects, and community partnerships that support adult mentor/student apprentice relationships on and off the school campus. The Board will discuss the implications related to programs and facilities design elements that support an IBL program. As the Board considers the ways inquiry-based learning supports the Excellence through Equity focus, there will be an examination of already-established IBL school models, including High Tech High and Big Picture Learning. |

Public Comments:
* Jonathan Mooney, Carlos Santini, Berenice Onofre, Robert Santini, Kim Turner, Ann Thanawalla, Jonathan Bijur, Nancy Chou, and Amber Richare addressed the board regarding this topic.
SMASH Principal Jessica Rishe, JAMS Principal Steve Richardson, JAMS teacher Devon Smith, and SMASH teacher Darwin Mendinueto presented the details of inquiry-based learning. Samohi juniors Willow and Mika; SMASH 8th graders Mateo, Elisa, Kim, and Rio; and JAMS 8th graders Samantha, Riley, Mia, and Yoxsira shared their experiences learning under the model.
The board discussed the suggestion of sending a survey out to parents; how the house system at Samohi could be modified to incorporate IBL; the fact that families in Malibu have expressed interest in an IBL school; how IBL could be implemented from PreK-12; the need to increase internship opportunities within the communities; the need for direct and clear outreach to families not familiar with IBL; facilities needs associated with the IBL model; the interest to have some components in place for 2018-19; and how IBL fits into our district’s focus on Excellence through Equity. Following discussion, the board directed staff to move forward in scheduling opportunities for staff and board members to visit more campuses with successful IBL models. Dr. Drati will meet with staff, parents, and community members to gather more information and develop a list of options and issues to be addressed for the board to consider in order to move forward with building a cohort of teachers interested in and ready for implementation of IBL pathways and on expanding SMASH to high school. The list of options will also contain estimated timelines and necessary resources. |

| It was moved by Dr. Tahvildaran-Jesswein, seconded by Ms. Leon-Vazquez, and voted 5/0 (Mr. de la Torre and Mr. Kean were absent) to adjourn the meeting at 7:22 p.m. The next meeting is a special study session scheduled for Thursday, November 16, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. in the auditorium at St. Monica’s Catholic Church (701 California Ave., Santa Monica, CA). The next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 16, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. at the district office (1651 16th St., Santa Monica, CA). |
