A special study session of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education will be held at 4:00 p.m. on November 16, 2017, in the St. Monica Catholic Church Auditorium: 701 California Ave., Santa Monica, CA. At 6:30 p.m., the board will move to a regularly scheduled closed session in the conference room at the district office: 1651 16th St., Santa Monica, CA. At 7:30 p.m., the board will move to a regularly scheduled open session in the board room.

.II. STUDY SESSION
Quick Summary / Abstract:
These items are staff presentations and/or updates to the Board of Education.
.II.A. Presentation of 2017-18 Single Plans for Student Achievement (SPSAs) for Elementary and Secondary Schools (120 min)
Recommended Motion:
It is requested that the Board review and ultimately approve the SPSAs submitted by the 16 SMMUSD school sites.
Rationale:

SPSAs for the SY 2017-18 incorporate each School Leadership Team’s (SLT) focus and address the following goals in alignment with the District’s LCAP: All graduates are ready for college and careers, English learners will become proficient in English while engaging in a rigorous standards-aligned curriculum, and All students engage in schools that are safe, well maintained, and family-friendly.  SPSAs were reviewed by the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) and approved by the School Site Council (SSC) of each school.

Following the detailed presentations, Dr. Tahvildaran-Jesswein expressed an interest in staff developing a walk-through process for board members to visit schools to observe the implementation of their SPSA/SLT plans.

Quick Summary / Abstract:

This special study session will adjourn to a regularly scheduled closed session at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room at the district office :1651 16th St., Santa Monica, CA.  Following closed session, there will be a regularly scheduled open session board meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Minutes:
It was moved by Mr. Foster, seconded by Mr. de la Torre, and voted 7/0 to adjourn the special study session at 6:05 p.m. and reconvene to regularly-scheduled closed and open sessions at the district office (1651 16th St., Santa Monica, CA).
