The Board of Education will call the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. in the Board Conference Room at the District Offices, at which time the Board of Education will move to Closed Session regarding the items listed under Closed Session. The public meeting will reconvene at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room.

The Policies and Procedures address how the agency will implement services for children and families. The Policies and Procedures meet the required Code of Federal Regulations (Head Start Program Performance Standards).

It is recommended that the Board of Education approve the Child Development Services Parent Handbooks for the Preschools and School Age Programs for fiscal year 2018-2019. |
The parent handbooks include current State, County and District policies and procedures as well as program activities. Input was solicited from Child Development staff. The handbooks have been posted on the CDS web page: http://www.smmusd.org/CDS/handbooks.html

It is the intention of the district to retool its facilities to support learning models that are project based and are aligned with 21st century jobs and skills. Education Specifications address modernization and new construction efforts that will allow progressive next generation learning to occur by focusing in instructional models that are project, discovery and inquiry based in their approach. The purpose of these Educational Specifications are: - To outline the physical requirements necessary to support the educational curriculum
- Based upon the curriculum goals and core values of SMMUSD
- Established and driven by educators
- Help create equity and parity throughout the District and to identify specialized programs
- Provide a road map for modernization and new construction
- Define learning environment criteria that includes program components, special requirements, adjacencies and functional requirements
- Are required by Title 5

Staff anticipates that this item will require a total of 165 minutes, with 45 minutes for the staff report and 120 minutes for board member questions and comments. |

Staff answered board members’ questions regarding the role furniture can play in the learning environment; focused pathways in elementary schools; distance learning; the aesthetics of perimeter fencing; the student input process regarding the ed specs; professional development spaces; spaces related to restorative justice; sound containment and privacy in large, open spaces; and scheduling the community meetings by pathways.
The board and staff discussed the need for flexible learning spaces to allow for future changes in teaching and learning. The board expressed its support of the ed specs and encouraged staff to continue the process. Staff will develop a FAQ regarding the various learning modalities as well as provide updates in Friday memos as the ed specs development process progresses. |
