SPEAKER: Yvonne Perez, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Paving Project Update: At both the Stockard Coffee Project (18,000 square feet) and the Sylvan Elementary site (1,600 square feet) where the pavement has been removed, the soil is pumping, meaning that the soil is failing and can’t be compressed. It has been ripped to sub-grade and allowed to dry twice, it is still not reaching the required compaction (90%). SKW reached out to the soil engineer who recommended two (2) options to fix the situation. Option #1: Cement treating the first 12” of the soil. The contractor brings in over-sized tilling machine and works the Cement into the top 12”. This is the less expensive option. Option #2: Over excavate 12” of soil and haul it off site. Install a TX5 geogrid underlayment. Fill with 12” aggregate base and compact. Option #2 as presented by the Soil’s Engineer is the only feasible option at the two (2) sites.
Sylvan: The Soil’s Engineer Option #1 Chemical (Cement) treatment is not feasible at Sylvan because of the small footprint. It will not allow the equipment to operate in the space.
Stockard Coffee:
The Soil’s Engineer Option #1 Chemical (Cement) treatment is not feasible at Stockard Coffee because there are numerous places where utilities are buried less than 6”. The equipment used to chemical treat the areas would destroy the utilities. (Large rotor tiller like device). The second option is costly as the affected areas total about 18,000 square feet and the Contractor is going to have to hand dig in the several areas where there are shallow utilities. It is unfortunately very labor intensive. There is an option to not fix the sub-grade, but it will cause the new asphalt to fail in a short period of time, which is not recommended.
The project is currently being delayed until a decision is made by the district. The contractor has moved to Somerset and Woodrow in order to stay on schedule. Even so, they are requesting an extension of six (6) work days for the added work. We will approve the work days, but will insist that substantial completion still be reached by August 2, 2019, per the contract days. |
