Quick Summary / Abstract:

PLEASE NOTE:  BUSD has moved to in-person board meetings. We ask that members of the public who wish to attend, including those who wish to address the board,  wear masks at all times.  Members of the public may address the Board at a meeting on any item within the Board's jurisdiction. Speaker cards must be completed requesting to address the Board and are available at the back table and may be submitted to the Board Secretary at the meeting. The  board president will call all the “open session” public comments to the specific items then being discussed by the Board (Board Bylaw 9323) during the public comment item. The Governing Board allows speakers to speak at meetings on agendized and non-agendized matters under public comment. Comments are limited to no more than three minutes per speaker. By law, no action may be taken on any item raised during the public comment periods and matters may be referred to staff for placement on a future agenda of the Governing Board.

8.1. Updates on New Legislation (Information Item)

Rationale:

Dr. Leslie Beatson, Assistant Superintendent of Education Services, and Mrs. Julie Corona, Director of Student Services, will present information on the new legislation passed in July.  The report will provide summaries of Assembly Bill 104 in regards to retention, pass/no pass, and graduation exemptions.  In addition, the report will provide information on Assembly Bill 130 in regard to Independent Study.  This component of the report will detail the requirements of the bill as well as BUSD's plan for implementing the Independent Study program.

8.2. First Reading of the Following Board Policy: BP/AR 6158 Independent Study (Information Item)

Rationale:

Policy updated to reflect NEW LAW, Assembly Bill 130, which requires that all districts, for the 2021-22 school year, offer an independent study option to students whose health would be put at risk by in-person instruction, as determined by the parent or guardian.
