TO:                  Donald Evans, Ed.D., Superintendent

FROM:             John Calise, Executive Director of Facilities

DATE:              March 27, 2019

SUBJECT:         Approve the Schematic Design of Washington Elementary Kitchen/ Cafeteria Modernization Project

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

On March 28, 2018, the Board approved a contract with HY Architects to develop a design for the cafeteria and kitchen modernizations at three (3) sites.  The Board must approve the schematic design so the construction documents can begin.  Two (2) of the three (3) sites (Cragmont and John Muir) were Board approved on January 23rd, 2019.  After several meetings with the Washington administration and community, the Facilities Department has made some alterations to the plan to address the desires and concerns of the community.  These changes include privacy stalls in the restrooms and sound attenuating panels in the cafeteria.  Additionally, the requests for a multi-use handwashing station outside of the restrooms and the modification of the lobby at the base of the stairs that lead to the Multi-Purpose room will be looked at and considered as the architect moves into design development.  The Washington community also proposed an entirely different design however after an analysis of this design was performed by the Facilities Department and the District’s consultants and architect, it was determined to not be feasible for a myriad of reasons.  At this point, the District believes it has exhausted the schematic design review process working within the confines of the existing space and is submitting this design for approval.
