BACKGROUND On December 4, 2017, the state released the California School Dashboard for this school year. This new accountability system includes state and local performance indicators. The Dashboard represents multiple measures to give a wider view of overall performance and progress than the previous Academic Performance Index (API) that was used in California between 1999 and 2013. The state indicators are academic performance, graduation rates, college and career readiness, English learner progress, suspension rates and chronic absenteeism. Performance levels are available for each school site and the district. Local performance indicators for the Dashboard were established by each district. There is no information disaggregated by school site or student subgroups for the local indicators. The four required local indicators are basic school conditions, implementation of academic standards, school climate surveys and parent involvement/engagement. CURRENT CONSIDERATIONS This presentation serves to inform the Governing Board and public of La Cañada Unified School District of the Fall 2017 performance on the California School Dashboard. The presentation will include changes in the Dashboard since last school year, the five-by-five color charts and LCUSD performance levels for each indicator based on previous year status and current change. Results will also be presented by subgroup. The number of subgroups for each indicator varies from one to nine. The significant subgroups in La Cañada are English learners, socioeconomically disadvantaged, students with disabilities, African American, Asian, Filipino, Hispanic, two or more races and White. The data presented will be used to help identify annual goals for the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS There is no financial impact to this discussion item.
It is recommended the Governing Board review the public presentation of LCUSD’s results on the Fall 2017 California School Dashboard and facilitate any further public discussion. |

BACKGROUND The state of California, acting on the regulations of Proposition 98, requires the governing boards of California school districts to prepare and issue an annual School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for each elementary and high school under their jurisdiction and to make them available to parents and/or guardians on a website. CURRENT CONSIDERATION Attached are copies of the current School Accountability Report Card for each of the four schools. Please note that the information is substantially based on the 2016-2017 school year. The SARCs contain required information regarding the condition and performance of each school. Staffing information is also included. The template used to prepare the documents was available through the district’s annual subscription to Document Tracking. FINANCIAL IMPACT There have been approximately 30 hours of staff time used in preparing these documents. As a mandated program, costs could be reimbursed by the state, if funded.

It is recommended that the Governing Board accept the current School Accountability Report Cards. |

Background In the 2016-17 academic year, La Canada 7/8 and La Canada High School partnered with the Challenge Success program in efforts to address concerns regarding student wellness and to identify ways to improve the climate of care at both schools. Both schools issued the Stanford Survey of Adolescent School Experiences and used the results to develop appropriate programmatic changes as guided by Challenge Success program participation. The Stanford Survey results indicated that students at La Canada 7/8 and 9-12 experienced significantly less sleep than recommended for their age cohorts Current Considerations In the 2017-18 academic year, both La Canada 7/8 and La Canada High School have continued as partner schools in the Challenge Success program. As a component of their Challenge Success Implementation plans, both schools have implemented a late start schedule, with school starting daily at 8:30 am. The creation of an oversight committee to monitor the progress and outcomes resulting from the LCHS 7-12 8:30 am school start time became an LCAP goal, as did the reporting out to the Governing Board of how late start is regarded by students and parents. Surveys have been given to various stakeholder groups related to the late start schedule and the oversight committee comprised of parents, teachers and students will come together during second semester 2018. Financial Implications The District will use one time dollars from the 2017-18 budget year to support this LCAP goal. A budget of $75,000.00 has been allocated for services, supplies, trainings, and professional development related to Challenge Success.
It is recommended that the Governing Board review the presentation regarding the Late Start Schedule for the 2017-2018 school year and beyond and engage in subsequent discussion related to the presentation.
